World Tourism Day

Without worldwide tourism I would not be sitting here writing to you all today. I fell in love with travel and tourism when I began to travel more extensively as an adult. I am happy to see an international movement to encourage and grow tourism around the world. Some of the best experiences of my life have come from exploring new areas. The best way to learn about other cultures, customs, people etc, is to immerse yourself in them while traveling.

What exactly is World Tourism Day?

The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) is an agency in the United Nations which is responsible for promoting tourism worldwide. Their mandates are to promote responsible, sustainable, and accessible tourism for everyone across the world. They have held World Tourism Day every year since 1980. Each year it is in a different country with a different theme. This year the theme is rethinking tourism. Getting the world back to thinking about international travel, after nearly two years of shut down due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Each country has the difficult task of reopening it’s borders and welcoming the world travelers again. With the reopening of travel, it is important for the industry and nations to make travel more sustainable for the planet and its population. It is also aiming to bring light to the issue of making travel and tourism more easily accessible to all people. I too feel that everyone should be able to experience the wonder of travel. It has blessed me with such amazing opportunities, I want more people to experience it.

Tourism is important to many nations

We saw during the pandemic shutdowns just how important tourism is to the economies of many nations. With borders shut around the world, flights grounded, and cruise ships empty, many industries were hurting. I’m so happy I have been able to jump on planes again and travel. Maybe I took it for granted a little bit before the pandemic, but I’ll definitely not take it for granted anymore. I’m so fortunate to have the ability to travel. As a person with a deep desire to explore places, the shutdowns were so hard. With that in mind, on this World Tourism Day, I count my blessings that I have been traveling again and helping the tourism industry recover. Cheers fellow travelers, lets get out and explore more of this fabulous word!
